The Weather Network using Twitter to alert public
Pelmorex integrates social media tools
Pelmorex Media Inc., parent company of The Weather Network/MétéoMédia, extended its All Channel Alert™ emergency alerting services last week with the launch of public safety messages over Twitter.
Public safety alerts received by Pelmorex Media from Environment Canada, and participating provincial authorities, will be reformatted as public safety updates and will be available to follow over the Twitter network.
The new service by Pelmorex Media allows Canadians everywhere to easily monitor public alerting messages of interest to them, wherever they are. Twitter “followers” can simply access Pelmorex Media’s public alerting “tweets” by visiting www.theweathernetwork.com/twitter or www.meteomedia.com/twitter and selecting the province or territory of interest.
“Using the Twitter network is just another step in ensuring we are able to reach Canadians with vital public safety messages in a way that is relevant to them,” said Paul Temple, Senior Vice President of Strategic and Regulatory Affairs at Pelmorex Media, “and it clearly reinforces our continued leadership position in public alerting in Canada.”
Under its All Channel Alert™ (“ACA”) family of public safety and emergency alerting products and services, Pelmorex Media receives and distributes weather warnings from Environment Canada. Pelmorex Media also has agreements in place with the provinces of New Brunswick, Québec, Ontario and Manitoba, to distribute provincial public safety messages.
In addition to public safety messages over Twitter, Pelmorex Media already distributes public safety messages on its television, website, email and text messaging services; PC and Apple computer desktop applications; Blackberry™ and iPhone™ applications; a public alerting RSS news service; and through satellite and internet data feeds.
